DAY 10 – 6th DAY NORTH

DAY 10 – 6th DAY NORTH
Today we are scheduled to visit Honningsvåg  (Rhymes with bonningsvåg).

The safest place to build a house – under the fences to catch falling boulders and prevent avalanches. Safer than a Florida beach during hurricane season

Everybody likes Hurtengruten to visit.  The crazy crew is fooling with the life boats again.
This drive was a little scary.  The road was iced over and it was pretty narrow.  See that camper at the top of the hill.  He was stopped/stuck/lost traction.  When we got there, on that hill, at that blind corner, we zipped right around, as if the driver knew there were no cars coming – and there weren’t any.  Indeed the driver was psychic/psycho.

In Scarsvåg, there was enough housing for the 150 people who used to live there.  Now there were 40.

At the Christmas/Winter House, we were presented with a nice array of tasty confections.  The hostess has converted a house into sort of a café.  Since the school closed, it has become the “town’s” gathering place.

The lady of the house narrated a film on king crab fishing starring her husband; it was well done.  Scarsvåg is the northmost active fishing village in the world.  Several Russian boats call Scarsvåg home.  They fish for crab and off load the catch to larger Russian boats at sea.  I’m sure they are following all the fishery limits on size and number of catch.

Out side some cod were becoming “sodd

Then we drove to Kamøyvær, known not only as home for a local artist, but also the worlds only psychic/psycho bus driver and pretty good photographer.

The woman artist works in collage, using, as far as I could tell, unaltered magazine pages.  Francie bought stuff.

Out the gallery window.

There was a small harbor in Kamøyvær and many interesting photo opportunities.  As you can see, fishing is important here also.  It seems that if they can hold on a few more years, sadly, they will become the north most fishing village in the world.

I don’t think this was a sculpture; I think it is an interesting piece of driftwood.

On the way back was this SAMI house.  The more rustic (relatively more rustic) structure in back is a storage “shed”.
